Matte Black Kitchens: Why the Finish Endures
Matte black kitchens have firmly established themselves in contemporary interior design, offering a bold, modern aesthetic that many homeowners now consider the ultimate statement. The look has long outlasted the trend cycle, and designers and homeowners keep finding new ways of blending sophistication, functionality, and warmth. Whether you’re planning a brand-new layout or upgrading your current kitchen, introducing matte black elements instantly creates a striking, high-end look.
Why Choose Matte Black for Your Kitchen?
Matte black has grown in popularity thanks to its versatility and timeless appeal. Unlike glossy finishes, matte surfaces create a soft, muted look that reduces reflections and fingerprints — making them perfect for busy, family-friendly kitchens. The deep, rich tone adds drama and luxury while maintaining a sleek, understated elegance.
A Versatile Design Choice
Despite its bold character, matte black kitchens are incredibly adaptable. They blend seamlessly with minimalist interiors, industrial-inspired designs, and even traditional homes when paired with the right textures and finishes.
The look keeps evolving, with designers experimenting with contrasting tones, natural woods, textured ceramics, and premium materials to enhance depth and personality in every space.

Matte Black Kitchen Details Worth Knowing
Matte black kitchens continue to dominate luxury kitchen design, with homeowners and designers finding new ways to balance drama, sophistication, and practicality. Here is what separates a matte black kitchen that still looks superb in five years from one that disappoints:
1. Textured Finishes for Depth
Flat matte black cabinets are being elevated with textured designs such as reeded, fluted, or grooved finishes. These subtle details introduce depth and prevent the kitchen from looking too uniform. Ribbed glass panels and grooved wood accents are particularly popular for adding an extra layer of visual interest.
2. Natural Material Accents
Pairing matte black with natural materials like wood, marble, and stone creates a striking yet warm contrast. More and more kitchens now feature oak shelving, veined quartz countertops, and stone backsplashes — softening the bold look of black with organic texture and elegance.
3. Seamless Integrated Appliances
To maintain a streamlined aesthetic, matte black kitchens are embracing integrated appliances. Fridges, dishwashers, and range hoods blend seamlessly with cabinetry for a clean, minimal look. Matte black appliances themselves are also rising in popularity, ensuring every element works in harmony.
4. Metallic Accents for Luxury
To prevent the space from feeling too heavy, warm metallics like brass, brushed gold, and copper are being introduced through hardware, faucets, and lighting. Matte black paired with brushed gold, in particular, creates a modern yet timeless contrast that feels effortlessly luxurious.
5. Two-Tone Cabinetry for Balance
A fully black kitchen can sometimes feel overpowering, which is why two-tone cabinetry is one of the most reliable ways to use the finish. Popular combinations include matte black lower cabinets paired with lighter uppers in white, soft grey, or natural wood tones. This approach adds depth, balance, and a more inviting atmosphere.

How to Make Matte Black Work in Any Kitchen
While matte black kitchens make a strong statement, they require careful planning to ensure the space doesn’t feel too dark or enclosed. Here are a few key design tips:
- Maximise Natural Light – Large windows, skylights, or glass doors can help brighten the space.
- Use Reflective Surfaces – Incorporating glossy backsplashes, metallic accents, or mirrored elements can prevent the kitchen from feeling too heavy.
- Mix with Lighter Shades – Balancing matte black with neutral tones or warm woods keeps the design inviting and practical.
Matte black kitchens are not just a passing trend; they have evolved into a staple of modern interior design. By incorporating contrast, texture, and natural elements, homeowners can create a space that is both dramatic and welcoming. Whether you prefer a minimalist look or a luxurious statement kitchen, matte black offers a versatile and timeless foundation for a stylish home.
Matte black kitchens we have designed and installed
Rather than describe the finish in the abstract, here are real kitchens from our own portfolio — every one designed and installed by our team:
- Contemporary Schüller matt black kitchen — the finish used across a full scheme.
- Satin black Schüller with Marble Nero — satin black cabinetry against dramatic veined stone, for a kitchen built to make a statement.

- Vienna lava black satin — paired with a concrete quartz grey-effect worktop.
- Modern black matt with Bora hob and bar space — integrated extraction and a dedicated bar area.
- Schüller lava black with white gloss — twin island, full AEG appliance set-up, Crystal White laminated 40mm worktop.

What a matte black kitchen costs
The finish itself is rarely what drives the price — the brand, the size of the room and the worktop do. Installed and VAT-inclusive: Nobilia from around £15,000, Schüller between £25,000 and £45,000, and next125 from around £40,000. Every one carries a five-year manufacturer’s warranty. The full breakdown is in our guide to German kitchen prices.
See it in person — matte black is hard to judge from a screen
Photographs flatter dark finishes. In a real room the things that matter are how the surface behaves in daylight, whether it shows marks, and how the sheen reads against your floor and worktop. We have one showroom, and it is in Portrack — 15 Portrack Grange Road, Stockton-on-Tees, TS18 2PH, open Monday to Saturday, 09:00–17:00, with parking on site.
You can also compare Schüller, next125 and Nobilia side by side in the same room — the only studio in the North East where you can. Book a free design consultation or call 01642 635635.
Matte black kitchen questions, answered
Do matte black kitchens show fingerprints?
Less than gloss, which is much of the appeal — matte scatters light instead of reflecting it. On very dark fronts you can still see marks in low, raking light, which is exactly why anti-fingerprint surfaces such as Fenix exist. Ask to see a dark sample in daylight before you commit.
Are matte black kitchens hard to keep clean?
No harder than any other finish in normal use — a soft cloth and warm water. Avoid abrasive creams and scouring pads on lacquered fronts, which is true of most quality cabinetry regardless of colour.
Will a matte black kitchen make a small room feel smaller?
It can if the whole room is dark. The usual answer is two-tone — black to the base units with a lighter wall run — or balancing the black against wood, stone and good lighting. Worth designing rather than guessing at.
Does matte black date?
It has been a mainstream choice for years rather than a single-season trend, and it sits comfortably in modern, industrial and even traditional rooms when the textures are right. What dates a kitchen is usually the styling around it, not the colour of the doors.
How much does a matte black kitchen cost?
The same as any kitchen in that brand — the finish is not a premium in itself. Nobilia from around £15,000, Schüller £25,000–£45,000, next125 from around £40,000, all installed and VAT-inclusive.
