A floating island for a County Durham kitchen
A “floating” island — one that appears to hover with a cantilevered or recessed-plinth detail — is one of the most striking things you can do in a kitchen, and it was the centrepiece of this County Durham project. Achieving that lightness takes precise German engineering, so we built it around handleless cabinetry from our Schüller, next125 and Nobilia ranges, where the structural tolerances are tight enough to carry the look convincingly. The result is an island that reads as a single sculptural slab anchoring the room.
Worktops, lighting and detail
The island and surrounding worktops are finished in large-format Italian ceramic, imported directly from Italy, chosen here for its slim profile and seamless edges that emphasise the floating effect. Concealed lighting beneath the island reinforces the illusion, while a Quooker boiling-water tap at the island sink keeps the surface clear and adds instant boiling, filtered and chilled water for everyday use.
